About the Artwork

“Young Sick Bacchus” (Italian: Bacchino Malato), also known as the Sick Bacchus or the Self-Portrait as Bacchus, is an early self-portrait by the Baroque artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, dated between 1593 and 1594. In this captivating masterpiece, Caravaggio portrays Bacchus, the god of wine, in a moment of divine vulnerability. The figure’s face, obscured by a censor box, hints at the artist’s own suffering during this period. Clad in a white cloth draped over one shoulder, Bacchus holds grapes in his hand—a symbol of abundance and excess. The play of light and shadow adds depth to the composition, emphasizing the grimace and tilt of Bacchus’s head. The still-life elements—a bowl of fruit and a carafe of wine—reflect Caravaggio’s virtuosity in painting genres beyond portraiture.
