About the Artwork
Van Gogh relocated to Arles in the south of France at the beginning of 1888 with the intention of starting an art colony there. He urged other artists to paint themselves and then trade canvases because he thought that the genre of portraiture might be used to reinvent painting. Van Gogh signed this picture "To my friend Paul Gauguin" and mailed it to Gauguin after he received self-portraits from the two artists, who were collaborating in Brittany at the time. He wrote multiple letters to his brother Theo, a Parisian art dealer, detailing how he contoured his jacket for coloristic effect, painted the background "pale veronese," and altered his face in reaction to Japanese prints in order to create his striking image. After he sent the work to Gauguin, their friendship deteriorated, and Gauguin sold it for three hundred francs.
