About the Artwork

Johann Bayer was a German astronomer born in 1572 in Rain, Bavaria, Germany. He wrote the book "Uranometria" (1603) which promulgated a system of identifying all stars visible to the naked eye. This was the first atlas to cover the entire celestial sphere.

This is the Sagittarius constellation chart from Johann Bayer's Uranometria, the 'mother of all celestial atlases,' first printed in 1603 in Augsburg. Uranometria is the most illustrious and influential star atlas of the history of astronomy. This piece includes the Sagittarius constellation with accurate positions of the stars and a beautiful illustration of a centaur which represents the Sagittarius zodiac sign.
