About the Artwork
Kristallnacht, Tree of Life, wire tree sculpture. On November 9–10, 1938, a series of officially sanctioned attacks against the Jewish community in Germany and Austria took place during Kristallnacht, often known as "The Night of Broken Glass." A total of 25,000–30,000 Jews were detained and taken to concentration camps, while 96 Jews were killed. There was also significant physical damage: 267 of the thousands of synagogues that were targeted were completely destroyed by fire. The term "Kristallnacht" originated from the destruction of thousands of Jewish-owned businesses and residences by fire and sledgehammer use, leaving most streets littered with glass fragments that gleamed in the moonlight. The "FINAL SOLUTION" began with this terrible incident.
