About the Artwork
“Schematismus geographiae mathematicae, id est repraesentatio (1753)” by Johann Baptista Homann is a captivating journey through the realms of geography and astronomy. This intricate print unveils a series of twenty-two figures, each a window into celestial motion and globular projections. Among them, a celestial globe (Figure 1) graces the canvas, while Asia unfolds in a projection (Figure 7). A spherical astrolabe (Figure X) invites contemplation, and a climatic model of Earth (Figure 3) whispers of changing seasons. Yet, it’s Figures 12 and 13 that ignite curiosity. “Systema Solis et Planetarum secundum hypothesin Copernici” reveals the sun-centered solar system, with Saturn and Jupiter in their cosmic dance. Meanwhile, “Systema Tychonicum” harks back to Tycho Brahe’s intricate model, where Earth orbits the sun, but planets revolve around our world. Hang this print, and let the stars guide your imagination—a testament to the eternal quest for understanding.
