About the Artwork
The artwork titled “Porta San Paolo, Rome” by Cass Gilbert is a beautiful watercolor painting created in 1880. The painting depicts an ancient arched gateway that appears weathered with exposed bricks. There are people walking through the archway which leads to an open space bathed in light. To the left side of the archway is part of a building with similar aged characteristics as the arch. The painting employs soft yet vibrant hues to create depth and atmosphere; shadows cast by the sunlight give dimension to the architecture. Birds can be seen flying near the top right corner above the archway adding life to scene.
