About the Artwork
The painting “Cottage Garden, Warwick, England” is a watercolor, gouache, and graphite on off-white wove paper by Edmund Henry Garrett.
Garrett was a commercial illustrator before he took up painting in 1877. With his wife, Marietta Goldsmith, he went to Paris in 1879 to study at the Académie Julian. During their extended sojourn abroad, the couple traveled through Italy, Spain, Holland, and England. Garrett returned frequently to England, where he made charming watercolors of gardens, castles, manor houses, street scenes, and quaint villages.
The painting is done in a loose, impressionistic style and showcases a variety of colorful flowers and plants. The house is a traditional English cottage with a thatched roof and a chimney.
