About the Artwork
This 1858 wood engraving by American artist Winslow Homer (1836–1910) was published in Harper's Weekly on November 27, 1858. The image was a satirical take on the holiday, depicting two young women who are struggling to prepare for Thanksgiving dinner. The women are surrounded by a chaotic scene of children, pets, and poultry.
The engraving is one of Homer's most popular works, and it is often used to illustrate the history of Thanksgiving in the United States. The image is also a reminder of the challenges that families face in preparing for the holiday.
