About the Artwork
Charles Henry Dessalines d'Orbigny (2 December 1806 – 14 February 1876) was a French botanist and geologist. He was the younger brother of the French naturalist and South American explorer, Alcide d'Orbigny. At the National Museum of Natural History in Paris, d'Orbigny classified many of the flowering plant species returned to France from his brother's natural history collecting journeys through South America. The standard author abbreviation Orb. is used to indicate this person as the author when citing a botanical name.
D'Orbigny was born in Couëron, France, and studied medicine at the University of Paris. However, he soon became more interested in natural history, and in 1834 he was appointed assistant to Louis Cordier, the professor of geology at the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle. In 1837, he was promoted to assistant naturalist, and he held this position until his retirement in 1864.
D'Orbigny was a prolific writer, and he published over 1,000 papers and books on a wide range of subjects, including geology, paleontology, botany, and zoology. He is best known for his work on the classification of flowering plants, and he was one of the first scientists to propose a system of natural classification that is still in use today.
D'Orbigny was also a skilled illustrator, and he made many of the drawings that were published in his works. He was a member of several scientific societies, and he was awarded the Légion d'honneur in 1849.
D'Orbigny died in Paris in 1876. He was a highly respected scientist, and his work had a significant impact on the development of natural history.
