About the Artwork

James Carter Beard was a prolific American painter who specialized in wildlife scenes and landscapes. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1837 and died in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1913. One of his works is Angel Fish, a watercolor drawing that depicts a colorful fish with a long tail and a pointed head. The drawing shows the fish facing left, seen in profile, with its mouth open and its eyes looking to the right. The fish has a bright orange body with blue stripes and yellow spots, as well as black fins and gills. The drawing is an example of Beard’s skillful use of color and light to create a realistic and expressive portrait of an aquatic creature.
