About the Artwork
“Grecian Musical Performers” is a stunning black and white print by Thomas Baxter that captures the essence of ancient Greek music. Thomas Baxter Jr. (1782-1821) was an English porcelain painter, watercolor painter, and illustrator. He was born in Worcester, England, and received his first instruction in art from his father, who was a china painter and gilder. Baxter was a fellow student of Benjamin Haydon at the Royal Academy 1. He was patronized by Lord Nelson and was often employed by him in making sketches at his estate in Merton. Baxter introduced figures from the works of Reynolds, West, and other well-known painters in his paintings upon china. In 1814, he left Worcester and established an art school in London, where he had pupils who were later distinguished in their special line. Baxter died in London on April 18, 1821.
