George Barbier (1882-1932) was a French illustrator, theatrical designer, and painter best known for his fashion artwork in French publications during the Art Deco period. He studied at l’École des beaux-arts when he moved to Paris from Nantes between 1908 and 1910. Barbier’s teacher was Jean-Paul Laurens, an academic history painter. Barbier had his first exhibition in 1911 when he was 29 years old and was subsequently commissioned to design theatre and ballet costumes, to illustrate books, and to produce haute couture fashion illustrations. For the next 20 years, Barbier led a group from the Ecole des Beaux Arts who were nicknamed by Vogue “The Knights of the Bracelet”. During his career, Barbier also turned his hand to jewellery, glass and wallpaper design, as well as writing essays and many articles for the prestigious Gazette du Bon Ton. Barbier died in 1932 at the very pinnacle of his success.
