About the Artwork
“The Melancholy Marriage, Modes et Manieres de Torquate” is a fashion plate created by Charles Martin in 1921. The artwork depicts a melancholic bride and groom in a garden, with the background consisting of a floral pattern. The print was published in the French fashion magazine “Gazette du Bon Ton” and is a great example of the Art Deco style. The melancholic mood of the artwork is emphasized by the use of muted colors and the couple’s body language.
