About the Artwork

“View of Montsouris Park, The Kiosk” by Henri Rousseau is a post-impressionist painting thought to have been created between 1908 and 1910. Rousseau, a self-taught artist, claimed that nature was his only teacher, despite never having visited a jungle. Most of his works depict lush jungle scenes, but occasionally he turned his attention to topographical images of Paris, where he lived. This particular painting captures Parc Montsouris, one of the parks that opened in Paris during the 1870s. The central focus is a simple kiosk surrounded by tall trees and bushes. Beyond the kiosk lies an artificial lake, one of the park’s attractions. In the foreground, various figures—a mother and child, couples, and a man—populate the scene, representing the diverse visitors the park entertained.
