About the Artwork
Anna Julia "Julie" de Graag (18 July 1877 – 2 February 1924) was a Dutch watercolourist, printmaker, and painter. She was known for her refined graphic work and sharp lined engravings, which often explored themes of nature and animals. De Graag's work is considered to be part of the Art Nouveau movement, but it also stands between that style and De Stijl.
De Graag was born in Gorinchem, Netherlands, in 1877. She studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, where she was influenced by the work of Jan Toorop and George Hendrik Breitner. After graduating, she moved to Laren, where she came into contact with the artists of the Laren School, including Bart van der Leck and Joseph Mendes da Costa.
De Graag's work is characterized by its use of strong lines, flat colors, and simplified forms. She often used woodcuts to create her prints, which allowed her to achieve a high level of detail. Her work is also known for its use of symbolism, and she often incorporated animals and plants into her compositions to represent different aspects of nature and human life.
De Graag exhibited her work widely throughout her career, and she won several awards for her prints and paintings. She was also a member of the Vereeniging van Beeldende Kunstenaars (Association of Visual Artists), a group of Dutch artists who were working to promote the Art Nouveau movement.
