About the Artwork
“H.F. Van Dake. 4 State Street(1859)” is a vintage advertisement for a shoe sale at “4 State Street” in Rochester, New York. The advertisement features a well-dressed man, possibly Henry F. Van Dake, shooting a rifle that emits a cloud of smoke filled with many number 4s and the address “4 State Street”. The advertisement states that "$30,000 worth of boots and shoes must be sold cheap for cash at No. 4 State Street, Rochester, N.Y." The advertisement was created by Thomas W. Strong, a steam job printer from 79 Ann Street, New York.
