About the Artwork
This is a map by Abraham Ortelius that shows the ship Victoria, the only ship to complete Ferdinand Magellan's circumnavigation of the globe in 1522. The map was published in 1590, and it is one of the earliest maps to show the Victoria.
The Victoria is shown sailing in the Pacific Ocean, with the words "Prima ego velivolis ambivi cursibus Orbem, Magellane novo te duce ducta freto" written below it. This Latin inscription means "I was the first to sail around the world, led by you, Magellan, through the new strait."
The Victoria's circumnavigation of the globe was a major achievement, and it helped to prove that the Earth was round. The ship's journey was also a testament to the courage and seafaring skills of Magellan and his crew.
