About the Artwork

“American Gothic” is a timeless masterpiece by American artist Grant Wood, painted in 1930. The iconic image portrays a stoic farmer standing beside his spinster daughter in front of their 1880s-style farmhouse. The figures are meticulously rendered, evoking images of rural American values and culture. The woman, Wood’s sister Nan, wears a colonial-print apron, a nod to 19th-century Americana. Meanwhile, the man, portrayed by their dentist Dr. Byron McKeeby, dons overalls covered by a suit jacket and carries a pitchfork. The painting’s name playfully references the house’s architectural style, Carpenter Gothic. “American Gothic” has become one of the most famous American paintings of the 20th century, inspiring countless parodies and capturing the essence of a bygone era.
