About the Artwork
Encompassing a millennium of courtly history, this rare and exquisite example of an early seventeenth-century calligraphy album comprises brush works by retiring emperor Go-Yōzei together with eleven other courtier-calligraphers, including his brother and two of his sons. Two waka poems, or thirty-one syllable poems, were inscribed by each calligrapher on paper embellished with a variety of natural and abstract motifs rendered in cut foil, colors, and ink details, as well as gold and silver powders. The natural motifs feature clouds, bridges, birds, cherry blossoms and leaves, and condensed landscapes, giving the overall impression of great sumptuousness. The handwriting ranges in thickness from strong, rich black to gossamer fine, and the writing style is ink-based, from running script to cursive.
